Arts & Music

All students receive Art instruction on a weekly basis. Student pieces are entered into state-wide and national contests. Each year, SJA student artwork is displayed at the Aberdeen Branch of the Harford County Public LIbrary. This Art show is based on a particular theme each year.

After receiving grants from the Artist in Residence program, SJA students were mentored by Artist David Cunningham as they completed two major projects.

  • A mural of our patron, St. Joan of Arc, is displayed in the Law Street lobby area. The mural created reflects her faith, courage, and purity, as well as the history at the time of St. Joan. Pieces of a mirror in the shape of the fleur-de-lis show that our faith should be reflected in our works as was St. Joan’s. The mural was blessed by Archbishop Lori.
  • A ceiling mural located at the side entrances landing demonstrates SJA’s participation in the Maryland STEM Festival as students studied space exploration. Images from the Hubble Telescope inspired the mural. Students engineered 3D pieces of space vehicles and objects to hang from the mural.

The Music program at St. Joan of Arc School is designed to educate and inspire students. The Arts are integrated into all aspects of the curriculum through project based learning. Middle school students focus on four basic topics–Music History, Music Theory, Music Performance, and Music Appreciation.

Students integrate Music with various curricula throughout the year. Students research, create, and explain specific topics in music through the use of online resources. Grade 3 participates in a recorder unit, learning to understand play written music then performing at the spring concert.

Participation is encouraged in SJA Voices Students lead music at liturgy as well as perform in concerts at school and local community functions.

SJA voices is open to students in 3rd–8th grade. Students rehearse once a week to prepare.

Students in 4th through 8th grade are invited to participate in a Band program offered by the Instrumental Music Program on a weekly basis. The Instructor prepares the students to perform in the Christmas and Spring concerts. The Band also performs in an adjudication each year. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a Summer Band Program and a Representation Band with musicians from other schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
